Meaning of pig tattoo

The pig in decalco is a tattoo of a sailor. A real one, a tough one, an old school one.

The pigs and roosters that were once on board as a larder could not swim, so they were placed in light wooden boxes to float in case of shipwreck. Drawn on the feet, they protect the sailor from drowning: if the boat sinks, they will carry him to shore quickly. The rooster is often placed on the right foot, in order to help the sailor in fights.

It all began in the Pacific in the 18th century when James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour discovered the tattooing ceremony in Tahiti: the sailors adopted the ritual, began covering their bodies with designs and brought the art of tattooing back to Europe. Since then, the life of a sailor has changed, but the old school designs have endured: they have such a strong symbolism that we don't see how it could be otherwise.
